The lever-operated suction device had our “gimmick alert” warnings going off, but in fact it worked perfectly on our marble work top and a glass table top. So every reason to believe it’ll anchor itself to any reasonably smooth surface.

AnySharp say to pull your knife towards yourself half a dozen times, then give it a try. If it’s not sharp enough, give it another few pulls through the sharpener.

Straight out of the box – that’s to say with no practice or skill on my part – it worked perfectly on my two Ikea knives. It was “slice ’em fine and slice ’em fast”. My first ever job was as a sous-chef and I’m strangely quirky about needing a sharp knife for my finely chopped onions and garlic.

It seemed the good times carried on for about 3 years. Sometime during the fourth year I definitely felt the knives weren’t coming up as sharp as I wanted and so I stopped using the AnySharp.

Since then I discovered that AnySharp sell “replacement tools”: the two “teeth” that the knife actually gets dragged across. In due course, we’ll do a review of changing those and see if that gets us back to “as new”.

But 3 years of use for the money we paid for it? That’s got to be fair enough.

One minor reservation

Is there enough space to pull an average knife through without cutting into the surface of the tool?

See the deep scoring in the plastic? To be fair, it probably wasn’t that bad in the first 3 years. After that, I started experimenting with different angles and more force to try and get it to work like it did to begin with. Which didn’t work, by the way.

Nevertheless, for all but the narrowest blades, you need to consciously avoid cutting the surface by raising the handle and decreasing the pressure as you get to the end of the stroke. On the face of it, it’s hard to see how that change of angle and pressure is optimal or a deliberate part of the design. But if you’re from AnySharp and you know different, please feel free to contact us or comment below. Notwithstanding this issue, our conclusion on the sharpener is overwhelmingly positive.

  • Suction device worked (marble surface, glass table top)
  • Satisfyingly sharp knives for 3 years
  • Care needed not to cut into the top surface of the tool
